Miracle Recovery: From Paralyzed to Helping Others

Janne Kouri was told he would never walk again. Paralyzed from the neck down after a freak accident swimming in the ocean five years ago, his world was completely turned upside down. But rather than give up, Kourani pushed through with the support of his wife and family, teaching his spine to function properly again and turning his tragedy into a life's work. read more..

My butt and my Thighs are so sore that I can not walk and I can barely even crawl after I’ve been sitting. So I either have to stay standing up and walk around or stay sitting down haha. I got up because I was hungry and started laughing and crying at the same time. I’ve been in all kinds of pain these last two days haha. Every time I do walking lunges I get sore. I think it’s because I put so much effort into them and did them so wide and deep (like, really close to the ground), so they are extra sore. Good stuff. read more..

Exercise Class

31 WAYS TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF TO EXERCISE

31 WAYS TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF TO EXERCISE: overcoming-obstacles:

  1. How you feel after a workout. I always feel great after a good workout. It’s a high. And I let that motivate me the next time: “You know how good you’re going to feel, Leo!”
  2. Time for you. While many people make time to take care of others (kids, spouse, other family, co-workers, boss), they don’t often make time to take care of themselves. Instead, make your “you” time a priority, and don’t miss that exercise appointment.
  3. Calories burned. If you count calories (and it’s really one of the most effective ways to lose weight), you know that the more you exercise, the more calories you burn — and the bigger your calorie deficit.
  4. Having fun. Exercise should be fun. If it isn’t, try a different kind of activity that you enjoy. As long as you’re moving, it’s good for you.
  5. How you’re going to look. Imagine a slimmer, fitter you. Now let that visualization drive you.
  6. Magazines. It motivates me to read fitness magazines. Not sure why, but it works.
  7. Cover models. Sure, they’re genetically freaky, and probably Photoshopped to look perfect. But for some reason, looking at how good a cover model looks helps motivate me to work harder.
  8. Blogs. I enjoy reading blogs about people who are into running, or losing weight. It can show the ups and downs they go through, and you can learn from their experiences.
  9. Success stories. I find the success stories of others incredibly inspirational. If a fitness website has success stories, I’ll almost always read them.
  10. Forums. Do the monthly challenge on the Zen Habits forums, or join another forum full of like-minded or like-goaled peopled. Check in daily. It really helps.
  11. Rewards. If you exercise for a few days, give yourself a reward! A week? Another reward. Do it often in the beginning.
  12. Fitting into new clothes. Wanna look good in a smaller size? Work out!
  13. Being attractive. That’s always a good motivator, as I’m sure we all know. Edited to correct language.
  14. Adrenaline rush. I get a rush when I exercise. Ride that rush to complete the workout.
  15. Stress relief. Wound up after a long day at the office? Get out and work off that stress. It makes a world of difference.
  16. Time for contemplation. I love, love the quiet time of exercise for thinking about things. Most of this post was written in my head as I exercised.
  17. A workout partner. Best thing I’ve done.
  18. An exercise class. Sign up for a class, perhaps with a friend, and you’ll be motivated to get there and work out.
  19. A coach or trainer. Worth the money, just for the motivation.
  20. An exercise log/graph. For some reason, writing it down is extremely important. Really. Do it for a week and you’ll see what I mean.
  21. Your before picture. You often don’t realize how far you’ve come. Take pictures.
  22. A 5K race or triathlon. Just sign up for one, and you’ll be motivated to train.
  23. The dread of feeling “yuck” from not exercising. I hate how I feel after not exercising. So I remind myself of that when I feel tired.
  24. Living long enough to see your grandkids … and play with them.
  25. The scale. It’s not motivating to weigh yourself every day, as your weight fluctuates. But if you weigh yourself once a week, you’ll be motivated to have it keep going down, instead of up. Combine the scale with the measuring tape, and measure your waist.
  26. Reaching a goal. Set a goal for weight, or your waist measurement, or a number of days to work out, or a number of miles to run this week. Setting and tracking a goal helps motivate you to complete that goal. Make it easily achievable.
  27. Posting it on your blog. Tell people you’re going to lose weight or exercise daily, and report to them. You’ll make it happen.
  28. Motivational quotes. I like to print them out or put them on my computer desktop.
  29. read more..

mothernaturenetwork:You’ve probably worn shoes every day of your post-toddler life, but in a few remote parts of the world, nobody wears shoes — and evidence shows they’re in better shape because of it.YESSSSSS!!! Excuse my excitement. I’m just a uh… barefoot enthusiast and I have been saying this for a long while now. Barefoot shoes. I meant to write about bare feet and running last year and had things saved about it but I never got around to it… Lost the inspiration to I suppose. This is one of the few reasons why I will only wear vibrams for physical activity and why I don’t really ever wear shoes, period (the other reasons are that I just hate shoes and I have a bunion). Bicycle Crunches-Weight Loss-Exercises-Thighs

Okay. So I am on anon because I am ashamed. I am so overweight its not funny. I'm fairly sure I am okay with my eating. It's my exercise, I really hate exercise in front of people and even in front of my family. My weight is mainly on my stomach and thighs, do you have any suggestions on what I can do? Alone, preferably? Thanks so much. :)

It’s okay to be anon. But I am not judging you and there are many people here who are on the same journey as you and they understand how you feel, none of us here are judging you As far as the Exercises go… You definitely can work out alone. Just make sure that the way and what you eat is really important in Weight Loss. You definitely should be sure that what you are eating is good for your body. If you have doubts, here are some tips. I do recommend doing cardio. So if you want to go on runs or jogs a few days a week, that would be great. If you truly are not ready to work out in front of people, you can do a few things alone. Jumping jacks and jumping rope will help get your heart rate up. Or do those jumping things where you bring each knee up to your chest. I forgot what they are called but if you need more info, I can find something. For Thighs, I always suggest lunges (or walking lunges rather than in place). If you really get into them and do enough, you will feel the burn the next morning. Squats, sitting against the wall, and chair pose will help burn those thighs too. There are some pilates videos focused on the thighs and I can find some of those for you. I also have thigh workouts in the Index of my blog on the Workouts page. That goes for abs too. For abs… Bicycle crunches, reverse crunches, bicycles and reverse bicycles (different from the crunches), flutter kicks, elbow to knee crunches, and Russian crunches (seated side twist) are really effective core work outs. Doing these slow and controlled add the burn and give for a better work out. Those are exercises that you can do in your room with nobody watching. Remember… cardio and really good eating! There are ways to help weight loss like drinking plenty of water, drinking green tea, and other ways. I have some posts on how to boost metabolism and good weight loss stuff in my blog if you go through it all. I hope this helps. If you ever need anything, have any questions… Never hesitate to ask! Girl’s best friend is dog who carries her oxygen
After their daughter was diagnosed with a rare lung disease, the Knobloch family had to figure out how their little girl would be able to carry a portable oxygen tank everywhere she went. Mr. Gibbs, a golden doodle puppy, came to their rescue.“They weren’t sure they wanted to go with a golden doodle,” Kinsleigh told TODAY.com. “But she went crazy for him.”“His job is to go wherever she goes and do whatever she does,” Kinsleigh explains. “If she wants to get on the bike and go down the driveway he has to learn to run alongside. Strength Training Workouts-Compound Exercises-Interval Training-Processed Foods

Thighs "Calves Help

- Engage in total body strength training workouts two days per week to increase lean muscle all over your body. Include exercises to target each major muscle group. Perform exercises such as bent-over dumbbell rows for back, pushups for chest, stability ball crunches for abs, triceps overhead press, barbell curls for biceps, squats for legs and lateral raises for shoulders. Perform each exercise for one set of 20 repetitions. Rotate through the circuit of exercises three times. Use weights that are heavy enough to push your muscles to failure by the last few repetitions of each exercise.
- Perform two lower body workouts twice per week to tone the thighs, butt and calves. Incorporate a combination of compound exercises that work multiple muscles at the same time and isolated exercises that target one specific muscle group. Execute compound exercises such as leg presses, lunges and dumbbell squats to recruit the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and calves. Perform isolated exercises such as leg extensions for quadriceps, hamstring curls and standing calf raises
- Participate in high-intensity interval training or HIIT cardio three to four days per week to melt stored body fat. Run on the treadmill for 30 seconds and walk for 60 seconds to recover, or sprint on the stationary bike for 30 seconds at a low resistance level and pedal at a slower pace with a high resistance level for 60 seconds. At a minimum, allow 24 hours of rest between HIIT workouts.
- Eat healthy foods to help you lose body fat. Consume all-natural low-fat foods such as skinless poultry, lean cuts of beef, coldwater fish, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy. Stay away from processed foods, especially those advertised as “healthy,” which contain large amounts of chemical sweeteners, preservatives, sodium and fats that may contribute to fat storage. read more..

Liquid Meal Replacement-High Carbohydrate Diet-10Km Race-Race Day

Tips for running your first race

What to eat on race day
You don’t need to carbo-load for a 10km race run in about 60 minutes – all your nutritional needs should already be met. So follow your moderate to high carbohydrate diet until two days before race day. The day before race day switch to a low-fibre diet (white bread, white rice, low-fibre cereal) and avoid very spicy foods – and dairy if necessary.
On race day, eat a light carbohydrate meal or snack about two hours before the race, like cereal or porridge with low fat milk; or toast with jam or honey. If you’re not hungry, have a liquid meal replacement. You shouldn’t eat or drink anything that you haven’t tried out before. And drink some fluid with your pre-race meal so you start the race well hydrated.
Once you’ve warmed up and stretched, have about 300 – 500ml of cold fluid about five minutes before the start of the race. If it’s a hot day and you’re running 10km in more than 60 minutes, you might need to drink about once during the race. Make sure you drink enough fluids after the race, and enjoy a salty snack.
Entering the race
If you want to avoid registration queues, get to the race at least 45 minutes before the start. This will give you time to find parking, and go to the toilet, if you’re the nervous type.
If you have a Temp license, pin it to the front of your vest with the safety pins provided.
Start the race middle- to near-back otherwise you might be ploughed down by enthusiastic elite runners who start at a cracking pace.
Running the race
Start at a comfortable pace, and try not to rush off because of all the adrenaline flowing. You’ll tire and run out of steam too early.
Water/coke stations
There will be a couple of refreshment tables on the run. Feel free to walk and take a drink (and catch your breath), before you head off again. Some runners drink and run – see how you feel.
Save enough energy so that you can run down the finishing straight and cross the line with head up high. What a feeling!
The idea of ‘race day’ can be pretty daunting for newbies, so we’ve gathered some advice from a few seasoned runners.
Don’t worry about finishing last
Nearly everyone worries about coming last, but it’s probably not going to happen – especially if you’ve prepared.
Choose your clothing carefully
Wear what you’ve trained in so you know it works. The rule is ‘nothing new on race day’, and that includes your sports bra, socks, shoes and running shorts.
It’s your first race so you don’t have a personal time to beat. Just focus on getting through and finishing – and most of all, enjoy it!
In the days before a race, vary your diet with nongrain carb sources, such as fruits and starchy vegetables, to benefit from a wider range of nutrients. read more..

Breast Cancer Survivors-Cancer-Related Fatigue-Extra Energy-Oily Fish-Mackerel

Omega-3 fats tied to less cancer-related fatigue: study

(Reuters) - Breast Cancer survivors who eat a healthy dose of omega-3 fats - found largely in oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel - may have some extra energy throughout their day, according to a U.S. study. Many people treated for cancer have lingering fatigue even years after their therapy ends, and while there's evidence that good sleep habits and regular exercise can help, other options are still needed, said researchers whose findings appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. ... read more..

Exercise Routine-Water Bottle-Dehydration

Generally I stop working out when I start feeling nauseated. Even when I stop for a minute and try to go back the feeling just comes back and it's very uncomfortable-am I doing something wrong or is there a way to prevent this? I drink water while I work out and it doesn't happen all the time, obviously only when I push myself really hard.

Try to eat 30 minutes before you start your exercise, also dehydration is one of the most common causes of feeling nauseous after exercising. To keep from becoming dehydrated, you should try to drink a minimum of two cups of water roughly two hours before you start your exercise routine. 20 minutes before you begin your routine, you should drink 2 more cups of water. While you are exercising, you should also keep a water bottle nearby. During exercise, you should drink around half a cup of water for every ten to fifteen minutes of your exercise routine. If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to avoid becoming dehydrated, and to avoid the nausea that comes with dehydration. read more..

Step it up. Take a brisk walk every day, whether it’s a path through your neighborhood or laps in a local mall. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or make a full workout of climbing the stairs. Sneak in extra steps whenever you can by parking farther away from your destination.
Make a workout of household chores. Mow the lawn, weed the garden, rake the leaves or shovel the snow. Even indoor activities such as vacuuming and scrubbing count as a workout if you increase your heart rate.Join in the fun. If you have children, don’t just watch them play. Join them for a game of tag or kickball. Walk them to the park. Dance. Take a family bike ride. Go to a community pool. Even if you don’t swim, you can enjoy time in the water or walk in the shallow end.
Consider modest investments
If you’re looking for fitness bargains, these inexpensive fitness products may be a good bet:
Dumbbells. Dumbbells are small, hand-held weights that you can use to strengthen your upper body. They’re available in many sizes.
Resistance tubing. These stretchy tubes offer weight-like resistance when you pull on them. Use the tubes to build strength in your arms and other muscles. Choose from varying degrees of resistance, depending on your fitness level.Jump-ropes. Skipping rope can be a great cardiovascular workout.Fitness ball. A fitness ball looks like a large beach ball. You can do many core exercises, including abdominal crunches, with a fitness ball. You can also use a fitness ball to improve your flexibility and balance.Exercise videos, DVDs or podcasts. Create the feel of a health club aerobics class in your own living room — or choose a program that’ll help you improve your strength and flexibility. Pick a program that matches your current fitness level and is endorsed by a certified fitness instructor.Improvise
If you’d rather not spend a penny on exercise equipment, use ordinary household items for various upper and lower body exercises:
Canned goods. Many canned goods can serve double duty as hand weights.Milk or water jugs. Fill empty milk or water jugs with water or sand and secure the tops with duct tape. To adjust the weights as your fitness level changes, simply add more water or sand. If you wonder how much weight you’re lifting, weigh the jug on your household scale.Step stools. A low, sturdy step stool can become exercise equipment if you use it for step training — an aerobic exercise resembling stair climbing.
Be a savvy shopper
If you’re interested in a specific exercise class or piece of equipment, shop around.
Check out your local recreation department. Many recreation departments offer discounted fitness classes to local residents. If you live near a high school or college with a fitness center, ask if the facility is available to community members.Buy used equipment. Some sporting goods stores specialize in used equipment — or you can check out listings for exercise equipment in the local newspaper. You may also find great deals on used exercise equipment online. Just make sure the cost of shipping won’t put the item out of your budget.Share costs with a friend. Trade exercise videos or DVDs with a friend so that neither of you gets bored doing the same workout over and over again. Find a personal trainer who’ll let you share the cost of a session with a friend or two.Know what to avoid. Some fitness products aren’t worth buying, no matter how low the price. For example, don’t buy herbal supplements or other products that claim fitness benefits overnight or promise to melt away pounds without diet and exercise.
Remember, getting in shape doesn’t need to be expensive. Don’t get caught up in memberships or purchases you can’t afford. Instead, c read more..

Yellow Peppers-Strep Throat-Downstairs-Exercise

I just spent a week in bed with strep throat! Today was my best day - I managed to walk downstairs without getting too dizzy. What's the best way to get back into exercise after being very sick?

Fluids: When you are sick, make sure you are getting enough to drink. Nothing will get you better faster than staying hydrated.
Increase vitamin C intake:Eat red peppers, yellow peppers, grapefruit or oranges.
Slow Down: Listen to your body.  If you are still feeling the slightest bit sick, no matter how bad you think you should be at the gym- stay home, if you push yourself you will be sicker longer. read more..

Unnecessary Details-Personal Questions-Strength Training-Body-Yoga

Do you do anything besides yoga? Like running/walking, or any strength training. You're body is like perfectly toned!

Yes I do, I sort of already have this answered in my personal questions page (I really need to update and detail that page more). I work out a few times a week. We hike sometimes in my fitness class in the hills behind the college and I love to be outdoors and want to go on more hikes/nature walks soon. I ran for about a month and loved to do it but before I go into unnecessary details, I stopped. Thank you! I would have to disagree though. I have a lot to work on (definitely my abs), but I really appreciate the compliment! read more..

American Heart Association-Body Fat Percentage-Cardio Workouts-Women

hi Camilla... i have this apple-shaped body and it's so hard for me to get a little bit skinny legs. so, when i lose weight, my tummy looks smaller but my legs don't change that much. any suggestions for me?

You look like pear-shaped ?Try;Cardio
In order to tone the pear-shaped body, it is important to keep the body fat percentage down. Cardio workouts are the best way to burn fat. Women with pear-shaped bodies have more body fat in the lower half of the body and need to incorporate cardio exercise into the workout to burn the excess fat. The recommendation by the American Heart Association, is that cardio exercise be done an average of 60 minutes several days per week. Additionally, women should incorporate interval training at least one time per week to boost maximum calorie burning. By following these guidelines, pear-shaped women will have better success at achieving toning goals.
Toning exercises are an obviously necessary part of toning the pear-shaped body. Concentration on the abdomen, hips, and thighs is especially necessary since these are typically the problem areas for this body type. Squats, hip extensions and crunches are all excellent toning exercises for these areas. Walking lunges are also a great way to burn calories while toning the thighs and buttocks. These exercises don’t require any special equipment and can be done virtually anywhere.
Squats are done by standing with feet shoulder length apart and pushing the buttocks out as if to sit, but standing back up before fully in the seated position. Weight should be on the heels to get the toning in the glutes and hamstrings. Lunges are done by stepping one leg forward and bending at both knees, keeping the weight on the front leg, and then getting back to a standing position. Repeat three sets of twenty lunges on each leg.
To achieve best results, women should plan on scheduling toning exercises four times per week.
Stretching is important to keep the body in optimal shape for the next workout. Tight muscles that have not been properly stretched before or after a workout can lead to injury. Begin at the top of the body and stretch the neck while taking deep breaths. Move down the length of the body, stretching each major muscle group: shoulders, triceps, biceps, chest, hamstrings and calves. Stretching will lengthen and loosen tight muscles, allowing better flexibility during all physical activities. read more..

Insight: Cheap generics no panacea for India's poorest

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Cheap generic drugs were meant to change the life of Nandakhu Nissar, whose mouth is swollen by a cancerous tumor. But the cashless and hungry 55-year-old sleeps on a pavement staring up at the windows of Mumbai's biggest cancer hospital. "What is a generic drug?" shrugs Nissar, who has travelled over 1,500 km (900 miles) from his home in the hope of treatment. "I have borrowed money from friends and relatives and it is running out fast," says Nissar, his pale eyes filling with tears. ... read more..

Reverse Crunches-Bicycle Crunches-Thighs

Hi! Just want to say that I love your blog. I was wondering what your workout is for abs and thighs? I am trying to really tone those areas. Thanks! :)

Hi! Thank you! And thanks for the work out suggestion (hip thrusts), I’ll be doing those later tonight when I work out. For abs, I do bicycle crunches, reverse crunches, cross over crunches, bicycle and reverse bicycle. Sometimes I’ll forearm plank, mason twist, and I’m trying to be able to do flutter kicks because they’re so effective. I also like to do normal crunches holding a 10 lb weight on my chest or for more of a work out including the arms (which is hard), holding the weight behind my head. For Thighs, I don’t really do much. Walking lunges are good, hiking, and doing some of the warrior type poses in yoga burns my thighs a lot. I don’t remember the names of the specific ones, but going from warrior I to warrior II, then resting forearm on top of bent thigh, then leaning backwards into the back leg… Doing those for a while are good. Runner's World-Sesame Seeds-Copper

6 Seeds to Include in Your Diet (from Runner's World)

noexcusestoday:SESAME
Used frequently in many cooking styles, sesame seeds are anything but common. One-quarter cup delivers about 28 percent of your daily calcium needs, 24 percent iron, 35 percent copper, and 25 percent magnesium.
Use raw or lightly toasted seeds (the pale or black variety) to make a crust for baked or sauteed fish, chicken, or eggplant: After dipping food in batter, roll in seeds before cooking.
One 160-calorie ounce contains 40 percent of the RDV for magnesium. Without enough of this mineral, studies show muscle weakness can result, especially during periods of heavy training.
Add toasted seeds (see “Handle with Care,” below) to salads, coleslaw, or steamed vegetables.
Although the research is sparse, many runners are using these round black specks to help them power through long workouts. What’s known for sure is that they’re high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have a positive impact on cholesterol. One serving provides soluble fiber, which aids in appetite control.
Soak two tablespoons in water for 15 to 30 minutes, until the water is absorbed. Stir the mixture into your water or sport drink before (or during) a long run.
Shelled sunflowers are a good source of both copper and selenium, which help protect your muscles. You also get 80 percent of the RDV of vitamin E, a heart-healthy antioxidant.
Use a coffee grinder to blend seeds into a spread for bread or crackers.
Just one ounce supplies more than 100 percent of your daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids and about 10 times more lignans (both of which help cut the risk of heart disease) than any other seed or vegetable. Look for milled flaxseed (or grind your own); whole seeds are edible, but your body won’t absorb the nutrients.
Add 2 tablespoons to pancake batter; sprinkle into oatmeal.
“INCA PEANUTS” (SACHA INCHI SEEDS)
Inca peanuts (which do, in fact, taste similar to peanuts) supply essential fats, zinc, copper, iron, and more. Each ounce provides eight grams of protein and is high in the amino acid tryptophan, which studies show may curb appetite and calm mood.
Make a trail mix using fruit and nuts. read more..

Walking matters!Ottawa Public Health’s Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Vera Etches, participated in the Winter Walk to School Day on Feb. 13. The annual Winter Walk to School Day and the partnership between the City of Ottawa, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Community Foundation of Ottawa and Heart and Stroke Foundation helps promote sustainable forms of transportation to school - such as walking and cycling - for increased physical activity, improved student and environmental well-being. Ottawa Public Health has worked with community partner Green Communities Canada (GCC) to support the implementation of the School Travel Planning (STP) project in Ottawa schools.  STP is a community-based program which applies a process that has been used with success in other cities and countries to increase the number of children and their parents choosing to walk and cycle to and from school.Every February, Winter Walk to School Day is marked by schools and municipalities across Canada and around the globe to raise awareness of the benefits and ease of walking to school, even during winter. The Ottawa project was introduced to ten schools (eight elementary, two secondary) in 2009-2011.  In 2011-2013, it will expand to an additional eight elementary and six secondary schools. For more ideas to get you moving, visit ottawa.ca/health read more..
