WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In tapping Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan to be his vice presidential running-mate, Mitt Romney has chosen an ambitious, self-described "young gun" who has staked his entire career on a single issue -- slashing the federal budget. deidreelliott:Click the photo to see it bigger/clearer. I woke up to another summer storm today, and sat out front in my sweater with some tea while I watched it rain. My friend and I had planned another hike in Forest Falls for today and it was the perfect weather to do so. There were apparently flash flood warnings up there, the roads were closed, and 4 people had to be rescued and I had no knowledge of any of that until both my mom and step mom called while I was there so things had calmed down since then. We went to the waterfall area to see how the pool area looked. I sat on a log going across the running water and my friend went to step into the water thinking it was maybe knee high and he disappeared. He’s 6 feet tall. It was THAT deep. Funniest moment of my life (so funny my abs were hurting as I typed this). Had to take a clif bar break to laugh about it. Then we decided to hike up to the bigger part of the waterfall. There was a family up there so we stopped a bit down to rest and look at the scenery. I looked up at the side of the mountain and saw a small tree branch tumble down along with a few small rocks. I thought nothing of it until I looked up and a girl was screaming and flailing her arms around. That was certainly sad. Then we went to pick wild blackberries and some were covered in sap so my mouth tasted disgusting. Was quite an eventful and adventurous day doing one of my favorite things ever. Hiking in the rainy weather is the absolute best. The air isn’t so hot, the rain feels nice, and everything smells so much more of nature when it’s wet. This was my day. Been hiking more often. So happy about it. read more..

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is working with community partners to address gaps in mental health programs in Ottawa on the heels of the 2011 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey. The mental health portion of the survey, conducted during the 2010/11 school year, found that one in three Ottawa students in grades 7 to12 reported elevated levels of psychological distress, over a quarter had been bullied on school property, and 12 per cent considered suicide in the past year. “Momentum to address mental health and prevent suicide in our community continues to build, and the results of this survey make it clear much more can be done,” said Dr. Isra Levy, Medical Officer of Health. “That’s why Ottawa Public Health, along with partners such as the Youth Services Bureau, Le Centre psychosocial and the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, is continuing its efforts to address gaps in mental health programs and services, particularly for children and youth.”Supporting the Youth Services Bureau’s Youth Mental Health Walk-in Clinic, working with Ottawa-area school boards to increase resiliency and coping skills in youth through the Healthy Transitions program and partnering with Crossroads Children’s Centre and Centre Psychosocial to screen children for potential developmental, mental, social, and emotional issues before they start school are just some of the services OPH is proud to help deliver.“Partnering with Ottawa Public Health has allowed the YSB to support more youth and their families in times of need,” said Joanne Lowe, Executive Director, Youth Services Bureau. “The results of this survey clearly show Ottawa’s children and youth need this kind of coordinated community support.”OPH will be providing a full update on its strategy to promote mental health and prevent suicide among children and youth to the Board of Health at its next meeting, which will take place at City Hall in the Champlain Room, 110 Laurier Avenue West on August 20, 2012 at 5 p.m. They will be joined by representatives from the Youth Services Bureau and Le Centre Psychosocial.“The inclusion of Francophone specific mental health resources and programs in Ottawa Public Health’s Mental Health Strategy is significant,” said Guy Bouchard, Clinical Director of Le Centre Psychosocial. “Ottawa Public Health understands the Francophone culture and community, and has targeted mental health programs to meet these needs. We value our partnership with OPH and look forward to continuing our work together to serve Francophone children in this community for years to come.” Background:What is the Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey? The survey has been conducted every two years since 1977 and features a random sample of students in grades 7 through 12, enrolled in Ontario’s public and separate school systems. Thanks to additional funding from OPH, a representative sample of 1,015 Ottawa students completed the survey in 2011. More data sets, including alcohol, drug and tobacco use, healthy eating active living and gambling will be released by OPH in the coming weeks and monthsMental Health, Youth Climate and Bullying Among Youth – Full report 2012Mental Health, Youth Climate and Bullying Among Youth - Summary (Youth Facts) 2012To learn more about the Ottawa data and mental health promotion and suicide prevention programming and services for children and youth, visit ottawa.ca/healthreports or call Ottawa Public Health Information at 613-580-6744 (TTY: 613-580-9656). To me that seems like too much, especially if you’re not doing a lot of exercise. I think you shouldn’t focus so much on that. Just drink plenty of water (but don’t focus on drinking an entire gallon) and focus on what you’re eating and physically doing. read more..

GUWAHATI, India, Aug 6 (AlertNet) - Hundreds of thousands of people sheltering in squalid, overcrowded camps in India's northeast desperately need food, water and medicines after fleeing some of the worst communal violence in a decade, officials and aid workers said on Monday. At least 12 people, including four children, have died and thousands are sick with diseases such as diahorrea and malaria caused by poor conditions in government-run camps in Assam state, where up to 400,000 people have taken refuge. "We are in a state of high alert," said Assam's Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. ... read more..

Pull Your Sweet Tooth with These TipsThere isn’t a single cure-all to this problem, but in general, the less sweets you eat, the less you’ll crave them. So how do you get to that point? Here are a few tips that just might help you pull your own sweet tooth once and for all.
- Try to find a substitute. Generally, people tend to crave sweets after a meal or as a pick-me-up in the late afternoon. It might be helpful to have something else there and ready to fight off those cravings. For example, peppermint tea might work in the evening, a box of raisins in the afternoon, a piece of fruit, or anything else that you can think of that would be somewhat nutritious and easy to keep with you. If you must have “sweet,” go with something that’s naturally sweet, such as dried fruit or even 100% fruit juice.
- Wait out the craving. Most nutrition experts say that the cravings you experience will only last a couple of minutes. So if you can wait it out, they will pass and you will be better for it. Try to occupy yourself for a good 10 minutes when you get a craving. Call a friend, take a short walk or do something to distract yourself.
- Set daily goals and reward yourself for meeting them. To a sugar addict, nothing is tougher than getting through the day without a sugary treat. The longer you can hold out, the easier it will become, so try to find a reward that would be worth holding out for. I did this about a year ago and gave myself a dollar for every day that I did not indulge in sweets, and at the end of the month, I would go get a manicure or buy myself something nice.
- Recruit someone to do it with you. If you are married or have a family, this would be a healthy habit for everyone to adopt. Clean out the cupboards and refrigerator of unhealthy foods and tempting treats. Make it a team effort. Hold each other accountable and support one another through the tough times.
- Put yourself in good situations. If you are one who loves to use the vending machines at work or will drive through the local gas station to fill up on snacks, then try to do things in a new way to prevent yourself from falling into old habits. Clean out all of the change and single dollar bills in your wallet so you aren’t able to feed the vending machine. Make sure you fill up on gas when someone is with you. Go grocery shopping after a meal, so you don’t load up on unhealthy foods.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food And Drug Administration on Monday said people who take the multiple sclerosis drug Ampyra, from Biogen Idec Inc and Acorda Therapeutics Inc, have a higher risk of seizures when starting the treatment. The FDA also updated the label for Ampyra, which is approved to help MS patients walk, to warn about the need to check kidney function before people start taking it, and every year after that. Hello! I would be glad to help. Sorry it’s taken a bit for me to get to this. After I first read this after you sent it (then I lost internet for a week), I had plans of starting a whole page dedicated to IBS and helping others with it. So keep a look out for that. I hope to get it up soon but I don’t want to spend a massive amount of time online like I used to. The first thing I did was start a food journal. Writing my meals down (and I wrote the time) and writing any problems I had after the meal help me to figure out what things caused me any pain or problems. Then I eliminated those things, for the most part. I’m also lactose intolerant so I had a lot of problems with dairy before I knew I was allergic to it. Don’t eat too much during meals, don’t eat a lot of ‘heavy’ foods during the morning and afternoon (I have my heavier meals during dinner), get plenty of fiber, avoid processed and junk foods, avoid carbonated drinks and I think caffeine, too. I drink tea, but coffee gives me problems as well. And definitely exercise. Exercise, especially core exercises, helped keep me regulated and keep the bloating down. Ibs effects us all differently so the foods I have problems with, you might not have such problems with. It takes time to figure it all out, but you get a closer hang of it. It’s definitely a struggle though. I also started taking probiotics, though I sometimes forget to, and they seem to help a bit. Also, I recommend not eating meat. As far as digestion goes, not eating meat helps with it a lot. A lot of people who stop eating meat say they don’t feel as constipated and they feel better in general. I hope this helps! read more..

claireruns:runningtothefinish:livingdetermination:nopityfitness:beccaliving:powerrprincess:So I’m fully convinced that even if I was like 6 percent body fat, I still wouldn’t be able to successfully wear those short, spandex workout shorts without having to pull them out of my ass crack and inner thighs evert 30 seconds. YEAH HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE WEAR THOSE THINGSI have the EXACT same problem.Right? THEY NEVER STAY PUTOkay I SERIOUSLY thought I was the only one! I always see people wearing the Nike Pro Combat shorts, and I’m like WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?I said this to a friend of mine, and she told me you’re actually supposed to wear them underneath other “baggy” running shorts? Maybe that’s why? I don’t know, I’ve never had a pair.I wear those Nike shorts but I get wedgies all of the time so idk I guess I’m used to it lol. But seriously though, they like ride up my back and into my thighs and it’s so annoying. They never really get into the crack though, for me anyway. read more..
HOW TO STILL LOSE POUNDS WHEN WEIGHT LOSS SUDDENLY STOPS AND FLAB IS JIGGLING: When you start a new weight loss program, especially if you have significant amount of weight to lose, the pounds often fall off rather easily the first few weeks. However as your journey progresses its common to hit a point where even though you're still exercising and dieting, the scale stops showing results. This is commonly referred to as a Weight Loss Plateau. There are a couple of different reasons why the scale isn’t budging. With a few tweaks to your routine, you’ll find that you can start losing weight again. Take a look at some of the most common reasons why you may not be losing weight:
1. YOU ARE UNDERESTIMATING THE CALORIES YOU EAT. When you start a diet, you’re probably quite strict about counting your calories. You may even use a scale or measuring cups to make sure that you are eating the right portion size. However, as time goes on, you tend to get less rigid, eyeballing portions instead of being accurate. This could be adding extra calories without you realizing it.
2. YOU ARE OVERESTIMATING THE CALORIES BURNED. If you’re following the calories burned guide on the exercise machine or relying on estimates from the internet, you may be overestimating how much you are burning when you work out. Get yourself a heart rate monitor that tracks calories and to make sure you’re working at your target heart rate. PS: How Many Calories do You Burn as per Activity http://www.indiadiets.com/Calculators1/Activitycalburn.htm
3. YOU ARE NOT EATING ENOUGH. People who are more active need more calories just to survive. If you eat too few calories, your body thinks that it’s starving and it tends to hold on to the fat. The barest minimums are 1200 calories for women and 1800 for men. People that are larger, more active, or breastfeeding may require much more. I’d venture to say that most people need much more than the 1200/1800. Calculate how many calories you should be eating http://www.indiadiets.com/Calculators1/Total_caloric_requirement.asp
. YOUR BODY IS IN A RUT. Our bodies are made to be efficient. If you’ve been doing the same exercise routine since you started a diet, your body may have adjusted to the activity, so that it’s not burning as many calories as when you first started. To remedy this, try switching to a different aerobic exercise, or increase your frequency, duration or intensity. If you’re weight training, try different exercises and be sure to increase the weights if the exercises are too easy.
5. YOU ARE LOSING FAT BUT GAINING MUSCLE. If you’re new to exercise (or getting back into it after a long layoff), you may be losing body fat but gaining muscle at the same time. I’ve had this happen to me several times. If this is the case, rejoice! That’s the holy grail of fat loss. How can you tell if you’re losing fat and gaining lean body mass? Track your body fat percentage over several weeks. You may see your weight staying the same but your body fat percentage dropping.
If you don’t think that any of these reasons apply to you, you may want to discuss your concerns with a Nutritionist. Be sure to keep a detailed log of your foods and activities so that your nutritionist can get a better idea of the whole picture.
